Senior Bookkeeper

Watford area
25 hours per week across 5 days
£25,000 for 25 hours (£40,000 full-time equivalent)

A long-standing product-based business is looking for an experienced finance professional to take responsibility for the day-to-day bookkeeping function on a part-time basis.

This is a hands-on position suited to someone who enjoys running a well-organised finance process, is comfortable working independently, and has a strong grasp of transactional accounting in a UK SME environment. The role will focus mainly on the purchase ledger and cashbook side, while also providing wider support across sales ledger, VAT and reporting where needed.

The business is keen to appoint someone who can get up to speed quickly and take ownership from the outset.

What the role will involve

You’ll be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring the smooth running of core finance processes, including:

  • Processing supplier invoices, employee expenses and credit notes
  • Reconciling supplier accounts and resolving discrepancies
  • Preparing regular payment runs
  • Managing bank reconciliations across more than one currency
  • Posting and reconciling company card expenditure
  • Handling customer remittance advice, deductions and rebate-related queries
  • Assisting with sales ledger administration when required
  • Supporting VAT submissions and related compliance work
  • Producing periodic reporting packs and finance information for external advisers
  • Preparing ad hoc spreadsheet analysis and reconciliations as needed

What they are looking for

  • Solid bookkeeping experience gained in a UK commercial business
  • Previous responsibility for purchase ledger, reconciliations, payments and general bookkeeping
  • Comfortable working in a small business setting with broad responsibility
  • Good knowledge of Sage 50
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Experience dealing with multi-currency transactions
  • Confident working accurately with minimal supervision
  • A practical, dependable and organised approach

Helpful additional experience

  • Exposure to import-related transactions or landed cost reconciliations
  • Experience supporting VAT returns, including non-UK filings
  • Prior experience working closely with external accountants or finance advisers
